NCI Packaging established Tinplate Distributors Pty Ltd (now Pacmetal Services – Glendenning) in 1980.
The idea was to distribute tinplate in lots less than BHP was willing to accept as economically viable orders. This gave economies of scale to National Can, and enabled Tinplate Distributors to discover other customers who were buying small lots. Tinplate Distributors also offered customers a slitting service. Shrewd buying of tinplate in this way also facilitated lower inventories.
